We want to remind drivers to exercise caution as buses pick up and drop off students. If you have a teen driver, please ensure your child understands the laws. If the stop sign is out and the flashing red lights are going, you have to stop 30 feet before you get to that school bus, or 30 feet behind the bus. You must wait until the stop sign goes back in and the red light stops flashing before you can proceed. A driver who breaks the law can be found guilty of a misdemeanor. The proscribed punishments are a fine of $250 to $1,000 and/or up to 90 days in jail. Here are some additional bus safety tips: 📌Review bus stop rules with kids such as waiting away from the road and always crossing in front of the bus, not behind. 📌Wait with the little ones at the bus stop. Make sure you and your child are visible. 📌Teach your kids to stand, at a minimum, three giant steps from the curb and board one at a time using the handrail when getting on and off the bus. 📌If your child needs to cross the street after exiting the bus, teach them to: ✏️Look both ways before crossing the street. ✏️Look carefully to make sure the bus driver sees them. ✏️Take five giant steps in front of the bus. ✏️Cross the street only when the driver gives them the go-ahead that it's safe. ✏️Teach your kids to wait until the school bus completely stops before getting off, and always walk in front of the bus, not behind. 📌Remind kids to sit quietly while the bus is in motion and follow any additional rules the bus driver has. 📌Teach your child the importance of behaving on the bus since any disruption can cause the bus driver to become distracted and could result in a crash. Don't forget it is the law that anyone driving a motor vehicle behind or toward a school bus must come to a complete stop while the bus is letting children on or off. School starts at CRSD tomorrow, Tuesday, August 15. Go to our website at www.cossatot.us for district information like the school calendar, lunch menus, and more. We do not monitor social media for questions. If you have a question or concern, you can find administrator contact information on our website. We are looking forward to a great year!
